The holiday season is upon us! Bring on the days of hot cocoa, Christmas carols, warm sweaters, glowing fire embers, decadent feasts, hunts for the perfect gift, time spent with loved ones… and the start of cold-and-flu season. To remain well through it all, your friends at the Traditions of Braselton Discovery Center have unearthed 10 tips that will help you stay Merry and Bright during the holidays. After all, one of those “perfect gifts” on your list might be a brand-new home at Traditions of Braselton. You’ll need to be well to tour the selection of available homes and home sites throughout our 1140-acre master-planned community.
- Wash Your Hands (A Lot): While it’s common practice to wash our hands after using the restroom or before we handle food, during cold-and-flu season, we could all stand to kick it up a notch. You should also wash your hands after playing with animals, after using frequently touched surfaces like door handles or escalator handrails, after coughing or sneezing, and whenever your hands are visibly soiled. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, effective handwashing can reduce the number of people who contract diarrhea-related illnesses by 23-40% and those who contract respiratory diseases by 16-21%.
Everything in Moderation: It’s all too easy to overdo it during the holidays, between all the rich foods and mad dashes from one holiday party to the next. While it’s wonderful to spend time with people you may not see as often as you like, the more social interactions you have, the more likely you are to expose yourself to viruses. Try not to stretch yourself too thin. And don’t overdo it on food and drink, or you may risk other illnesses beyond a common cold or the flu, like hypertension, elevated cholesterol levels, and food-borne illnesses.- Get Plenty of Sleep: Even as an adult, it can be challenging to get a good night’s sleep with all those sugarplums dancing in our heads! Plus, there’s the worry of gift orders shipping on time, balancing life and work during the holidays, forgetting someone on your shopping list, and so much more. Still, being well-rested is one of your best lines of defense against falling ill during the holidays. Aim for 7-9 hours of QUALITY sleep by limiting stimulation from mobile devices right before bed, waiting at least three hours between mealtime and bedtime, creating a relaxing bedtime ritual, and fostering a dark, quiet, and cool environment.
- Support Your Immune System Through a Healthy Diet: Try not to make every day a “cheat day” during the holidays. Endeavor to introduce nutrient-rich, immune-boosting foods to your body whenever possible, like blueberries, citrus fruits, leafy greens, and lean proteins. Supplements like Vitamins A, B, C, D, and E, plus Zinc, Echinacea, and Selenium, can be added for an extra layer of protection if you’re not absorbing enough from your foods.
- Stay Hydrated: Between one too many cocktails at a holiday party, rushing between shops at the mall, and all that lovely heated air in our homes, it’s easy to become dehydrated during the holidays. Start carrying a refillable water bottle everywhere you go and make hydration a priority. The Mayo Clinic recommends 15.5 cups (or 3.7 liters) a day for men and 11.5 cups (or 2.7 liters) a day for women. Dehydration can drain your energy and make you more susceptible to becoming ill.
Prioritize “ME” Time: Although they can be wonderful, the holidays can also be hectic. If you are blessed with some time off, avoid overscheduling. Find ways – and time – to indulge in self-care. Sneak in a bubble bath, curl up with a good book, go for a hike, gift yourself a spa day, take a nap, hit the yoga mat – anything to help yourself feel well-rested, centered, and healthy.- Listen to Your Body: While the desire to stay well may be strong, certain viruses may be stronger. Pay attention to the signs and do your best to stay ahead of a nasty cold, flu, or COVID. Early detection may mean the difference between a few sniffles and being bedridden for the better half of the holiday season. Watch for scratchy throats, congestion, fever, cough, fatigue, body aches, and anything else that might signal you’re getting sick. If you can’t schedule a visit to your primary care physician right away, consider going to an urgent care facility to get the diagnosis and medication you need to limit the severity of your illness.
