The way we dress can boost our confidence and self-esteem, secure our personal brand in the eyes of others, and protect our bodies from the heat or cold. As the kids head back to school, it’s important to let them have a say in HOW they wish to dress while keeping them apprised of the latest trends. For the 2026-2027 school year, fashion experts have weighed in on the must-haves for your kids’ back-to-school wardrobe…

• Bottoms Up: Cargo pants, Bermuda shorts, baggy jeans, and low-rise bootcut jeans are all experiencing a renaissance.
• Big is Beautiful: Oversized hoodies and relaxed cardigans are all the rage in layering pieces.
• Put Money on Preppy: Varsity Jackets, sweater vests, button-down shirts, pleated mini skirts, and polos will bring a 50s through 80s vibe back to school campuses
• Color Their World: Bold reds, statement-making teal, and pale sage green dominate the color charts.
• Fun is Afoot: In footwear, chunky sneakers and loafers (with crew socks) will rule the school.
• Exercise their Right to Accessorize: Earth-tone backpacks, backpack/purse/shoe/bracelet charms, and eye-catching brooches (YES – brooches!) are all making a comeback.

If you lived in Traditions of Braselton, you’d have a variety of options for back-to-school shopping in our area. For the largest selection, you’ll want to head south on I-85 to the Mall of Georgia and surrounding shops in Buford. For the best bargains, you can head north on I-85 to the Tanger Outlets in Commerce. And for those high school girls who prefer a more “curated” look, the boutiques in Braselton, Athens, and Jefferson won’t disappoint… particularly if you have Image Boutique, the Linenhaus, Cheeky Space, Cheeky Peach, DressUp Athens, Empire South, Fab’rik Athens, and more on your list of destinations.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Dress code violations can cause embarrassment for any child, so before you head out to shop for those Back-to-School fashions, be sure to check with your child’s school for dress code policies!

If your child(ren) attends school within the Jackson County School System for the 2026-2027 school year, JCSS dress code policies provide the following guidelines:

General:

• Clothing should not interfere with learning.
• Clothing should not contain the following: gang symbols, racial or sexual connotations, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, double meanings, inappropriate slogans, profanity, or obscene language.
• Any clothing or accessories that have spikes or bullets.
• No blankets worn around the body.

Head:

• Headwear (e.g., hats, hoods, beanies, scarves, bandanas) is allowed only if it does not cover the face or ears. This ensures visibility and hearing for safety and communication. (Prior approval may be granted by school administration for any head covering for religious or medical reasons.)
• Headwear that blocks any part of the face (except approved masks) or covers the ears is not allowed. School administration will make the final determination as to whether certain headwear covers a student’s face or ears
• No sunglasses in the building.
• Masks for health reasons must follow dress code and not cause classroom or school disruptions.

Upper Body:

• No see-through or sheer tops.
• Sleeveless tops should be no less than 2.5 inches in width on the shoulder.
• No cleavage should be seen–this includes bralettes, sports bras, and any other undergarment.
• No midriff should be seen.
• No bare shoulders. Shirts with shoulder cut-outs should still have fabric of no less than 2.5 inches on the top of the shoulder.

Lower Body:

• No undergarments should be seen.
• Students must wear jeans, pants, shorts, or skirts that reach mid-thigh. A good barometer is that shorts, etc. should extend beyond the fingertips when arms hang at the side of the body.
• No holes in pants higher than what would be normal short length.

Feet:

• Shoes must be worn at all times. Heelies, rollerblades, and skateboards are not allowed on campus. If these items are brought to school, they will be kept in the front office for the day.

If your child(ren) attends Jefferson Elementary School or Jefferson Academy for the 2026-2027 school year, they are required to wear school uniforms as specified below. Approved school colors are khaki, red, white, navy blue, and royal blue. All clothing must be solid and in approved school colors only.

• Shirts must have a collar and be polo-style or button-up.
• Pants, shorts, skirts, jumpers, and dresses must be fingertip length or longer.
• Belts are not required.
• Athletic shorts/pants and sweatpants are not permitted.
• Jumpers must have a collared shirt underneath them.
• Leggings worn under pants, shorts, skirts, or jumpers must be solid and in approved school colors.
• Sweatshirts must be in school colors (red, white, navy blue, royal blue). Gray sweatshirts are permitted.
• Tennis shoes are required on gym days.
• Patterned shirts and bottoms are not considered dress code.
• Hoods or head coverings are not permitted in the classroom or building.
• Headbands may be worn, but animal headbands (e.g., unicorns, cat ears) are not permitted except on predetermined hat days.

If your child(ren) attend Jefferson Middle School or Jefferson High School, approved clothing includes the following:

• Clothing must cover the shoulders and the area from one underarm across to the other, front and back, and extend below the waist.
• Clothing must have sleeves and cover undergarments.
• The length of shorts, skirts and dresses must be no more than five inches above the knee, front and back.
• Tops worn over leggings/yoga pants must be at least fingertip length, front and back.
• Rips or tears, with or without fray, in clothing must be below the knee.
• Shoes must be worn at all times and should be safe for the school environment.
