An age-old ritual of the season of renewal, it’s time for the big Spring Clean! This is particularly true if you’re considering putting your home on the market and moving to Traditions of Braselton. Beyond enhancing your own enjoyment of your home while you still live there, intentionally refreshing each space will ensure it shows well when real estate agents bring their clients to explore each room. And the better it shows, the better the offer you are likely to receive. Because we’re really excited about the prospect of you becoming one of our newest neighbors, the Traditions of Braselton Discovery Center team has pulled together a helpful room-by-room list of Spring Cleaning tips.
DIY All-Purpose Cleaning Solution Recipe
Fill a spray bottle with equal parts distilled water and white vinegar. Put the lid on and shake to mix. If you’d like to add a natural fragrance to the mix, consider incorporating the peel of an orange, lemon, or lime; sprigs of rosemary or mint; or several drops of the essential oil of your choosing – like lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, or tea tree. This solution works beautifully in the kitchen, the bathrooms, and on most solid surfaces.
Decluttering Hacks
Don’t love to clean? You’re not alone. While some find it a therapeutic exercise, many endeavor to avoid cleaning until absolutely necessary – such as the impending arrival of houseguests. If it’s not your favorite pastime, decluttering is a great way to limit the number of items you’ll need to clean or make more room in closets and cabinets to stow some of the clutter on floors and counters. Here are a few hacks to help you get started…
- To avoid getting overwhelmed, tackle this exercise room-by-room.
- Set up six boxes marked: trash, recycle, donate, sell, repair/repurpose, and undecided. Tuck the items in the last box away for a month, then revisit them to see how you feel about each one. Chances are, you won’t have missed them, and they can go into one of your other boxes.
- Detach yourself and ask the question, “When’s the last time I used this/Does this serve a purpose in my life?” If the answer is a long time or no, let it go.
- Focus first on high clutter areas to ensure a sense of accomplishment – such as medicine cabinets, bathroom and kitchen drawers, nightstands, and closets.
- With the space you’ve cleared up in drawers and cabinets, consider clearing off flat surfaces – like your bathroom and kitchen counters – for a clean, uncluttered feeling.
- Get creative with your storage solutions for the items you’d like to keep – either go decorative, like pretty trays, boxes, storage ottomans, closed bookcases, and baskets, or go functional, like underbed storage – an often overlooked and underused space.
- Rethink your existing cabinets, drawers, and closets, so you have a place for the clutter you opt to keep.
- Once you think you’re done decluttering, view your home through the eyes of a guest or prospective homebuyer. You may discover that you might need to declutter a bit more.
- HOT TIP: Listen to music or your favorite podcast to stay on task and help the time pass quickly.
Once you’ve decluttered, it’s time for a deep clean…
Spring Cleaning the Bedrooms
- If you’re not already in the habit, make your bed every day.
- Dust and clean all surfaces – don’t forget the blinds, windowsills, and baseboards.
- Organize your bedroom closet by clothing type and color. Not only is this visually appealing, but it will also make putting together outfits and finding articles of clothing much easier.
- Wash sheets, pillowcases, and blankets at least once a week; flip your mattress once a month.
- Vacuum carpet, rugs, and upholstered surfaces. If you have LVF or hardwoods, sweep and mop.
- Get in the habit of putting away clothes and personal items immediately after use so you don’t undo all of your hard work to declutter.
- A clean bedroom promotes the sense of a peaceful retreat – a place where you can relax, find mental clarity, and minimize stress. On the practical front, cleaning your bedroom will help reduce allergens, improve air quality, and promote better sleep
Spring Cleaning the Bathrooms
- Clear all items from the countertops and shower/bath before cleaning.
- Dust off high surfaces first, then clean mirrors, sinks, countertops, and floors. This is a space where your DIY all-purpose cleaner will come in handy!
- Wipe your toilet seat, exterior, and handle with a disinfectant. Apply toilet cleaner, wait a few minutes, and then scrub the bowl.
- For the shower and tub, if you don’t like to use heavy-duty commercial cleaners, you can make a paste of baking soda mixed with a few drops of white vinegar to apply to surfaces. Let it sit for a few minutes and then scrub to remove mold, mildew, and soap scum. If your grout is no longer white, this paste and a toothbrush should help bring it back to its former glory.
- Sweep the floors and then mop with your vinegar and distilled water mixture. Take any throw rugs outdoors to shake off or, if washable, wash.
- HOT TIP: If your bathroom smells musty, place an open box of baking soda in the cabinet under the sink to absorb odors.
Spring Cleaning the Kitchen
- Deep clean appliances inside and out. In the fridge, discard anything that’s expired and organize items in a way that makes sense. In the oven, if you have a lot of cooked-on grime, consider using a heavy-duty oven cleaner to make the task easier and more thorough. In the dishwasher, use a dedicated cleaner to eliminate mold, mildew, and soap buildup. For the stove, if you have a glass cooktop, a non-abrasive scrub will help remove cooked-on buildup.
- Go through your pantry to find and discard any expired food, herbs, and spices.
- Tackle all kitchen surfaces – start by dusting up high, then work your way down to the cabinet doors, countertops, door handles, and drawer pulls. Your DIY all-purpose cleaner will prove an excellent tool for combating grease buildup.
- Don’t forget the FLOORS and baseboards – sweep or vacuum to capture food crumbs and then mop to clean up overlooked spills and foot traffic buildup.
Spring Cleaning the Living Room
- Because this is a room where everyone typically does a lot of LIVING, dust has a way of collecting on all surfaces. Begin by dusting everything – starting from the top down.
- Begin by using a ladder to wipe off the blades of your ceiling fan and any light fixtures – followed by photos and wall art, knick-knacks, accent tables, and bookcases. Work your way down to the baseboards. A duster may not be enough to do the trick. A microfiber towel and your DIY all-purpose cleaner may be required to remove stuck-on dust. For your wood accent furniture, you can end with a furniture polish to add a little shine.
- If you have curtains, follow the cleaning instructions to either wash or dry clean them to really refresh the room. The same goes for throw pillow covers and blankets.
- Take your sofa and chair cushions outside to bang out the dust. Use a vacuum attachment to remove dust from the fixed upholstery, then finish with a crevice tool to pick up any food crumbs that may have fallen between the cushions. Consider using a steam cleaner to remove any stains.
- Clean your windows with a window cleaner. Don’t forget to dust those blinds!
- Vacuum rug/area rugs and/or sweep the hardwoods before mopping with a dedicated wood floor cleaner.
- Take a good look at the room’s layout to make sure you’re optimizing it. Spring is an excellent time to rearrange the furniture, swap out your area rugs, and invest in new pillow covers and throws to breathe a bit of Spring into your main living space.
Spring Cleaning the Outdoor Living Spaces
- The Winter months can take a toll on your outdoor living spaces. To prep them for that first backyard BBQ or garden party of the season, begin by blowing all the collected leaves and spider webs away – followed by a brisk brooming.
- Clean the surfaces of your outdoor furniture, beginning with a duster to sweep away any stubborn spider webs and ending with your DIY all-purpose cleaner.
- Inspect, repair, or replace any furniture or accents that didn’t fare so well during Georgia’s deep freeze. If you have wooden furniture, it may require sanding and staining as the outdoor entertaining season approaches. You also might need to invest in new outdoor pillows, cushions, rugs, and a patio umbrella.
- Fill containers with Spring flowers to bring new life to these spaces.
Spring Cleaning the Garage
- Save this project for a sunny day, as you’ll likely need to remove items and place them in the driveway as you tackle this annual deep clean.
- This catch-all space will truly benefit from your initial step to declutter. Once that’s completed, inspect and organize all your tools – repairing or replacing anything you’ll need for yardwork and planting your Spring flowerbeds or tackling those Spring projects indoors.
- A blower will help clear out any leaves and spiderwebs that may have snuck under the garage door during the Fall and Winter. You can follow it up with a brisk sweep. A shop vacuum will help you reach the corners and the spaces behind bulky items.
- Clean and inspect your garage door opener. The chain may require a spray lubricant to keep functioning smoothly, but check your operation manual to make sure it’s advisable.
- Clean your garage windows and blinds – they can see a lot of buildup.
- Assess whether this space might benefit from organizational tools, such as a workbench with drawers and pegboards or cabinets for stowing toys and garden tools.
