Not only is May designated “Barbecue Month,” but it’s also the month that flings the grill lid wide open for a barbecue season that spans from springtime backyard BBQs to at-home fall tailgate parties. To help you prepare for a well-seasoned barbecue season ahead, the party people in the Traditions of Braselton Discovery Center have curated a savory list of six tips to enhance the flavor of your future backyard gatherings…
Prep Your Grill
After a long winter and an early pollen-laden spring, you’ll want to assess the state of your grill. Dust away the cobwebs and determine whether a quick clean will do the trick or if replacement parts will be required. If you go the cleaning route, there are loads of new grill cleaners and bristle-free scrubbers on the market to help you tackle those grimy, greasy grill grates. If you’re looking for a more natural cleaner for your grill, try a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water. It will help break down grease and kill bacteria. Mix the vinegar and water in a spray bottle, spray generously over a cooled grill, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes. For a standard grill, rip off a large piece of aluminum foil, roll it into a ball, and use it as a scrubber. If your grill is particularly grimy, try sprinkling baking soda over the grates before you apply the vinegar mixture. Once clean, rinse all parts with warm water, wipe them with a clean rag, or let them air-dry before placing them back inside the grill.
If your grill grates and heating plates have seen better days, and there’s rust that can’t be reversed after being out in the elements for too long, take note of your grill’s make and model, and see if you can find replacement parts on Amazon or other online retailers. It’s often a more wallet-friendly alternative to replacing your grill altogether. The last step in prepping your grill is checking the propane tank. Do you have enough to fuel your first BBQ of the season? If so, you should be ready to go!
Determining If You Need a New Grill
The average lifespan of most grills ranges from 3-5 years for a budget grill to 10-15 years for a high-end stainless-steel model. If your current grill has seen better days, a quick clean won’t do the trick, or it’s so old that replacement parts are hard to come by, it might be time to invest in a new grill.
Do your research on the many cool new options out there. If you are a low-and-slow griller, a ceramic Kamado grill may be the ideal fit for you. Do you love cooking for a crowd? A super-sized barrel grill might be the answer. If you’re not exactly a weekend warrior, but enjoy the occasional low-maintenance, grill-out with friends, a classic propane grill may be the move. Do you love a little smoky flavor added to your grilled meats? A pellet grill that uses compressed wood pellets to infuse the flavor of hickory, pecan, maple, oak, or mesquite into your meat is a terrific option. There are also hybrid grills that combine gas and charcoal to offer a little flexibility, and flat-top griddles that provide a hibachi-like experience many grill masters swear by.

Prepping Your Backyard
Once your grill is set, it’s time to prep the stage that surrounds it. Grilling is often a social act, and you want to make sure everyone is comfortable while you work your barbecue magic. How is the backyard landscaping shaping up? Would your back patio benefit from adding some hanging container plants or breezy palms to help set the tone? How about seating? If space allows, you’ll want to mirror your interior with separate dining and living spaces: a cozy conversation set where your guests can relax and chat before gathering around an adjacent dining table to enjoy the fruits of your labor. If you’re already set on both, assess whether the cushions could benefit from a cleaning. You can also refresh the look of your outdoor living space with some new throw pillows and an outdoor area rug. Because insects are often unwelcome guests at any backyard BBQ, you can either look to chemical tools – like a fogger or citronella tiki torches – to eradicate insects from the equation, or you can use a more natural approach that’s safer for birds, pets, and kids. Plants like lavender, citronella, basil, lemongrass, and lemon eucalyptus are effective options for repelling mosquitoes.
Curating New Recipes
Whether shopping the weekly ad flyers from your local grocery store or tapping into the latest offerings at your neighborhood butcher shop, it’s important to design your menu not only for the occasion but also for the guests in attendance. Be mindful of allergies – shellfish is a trigger for many. Once you’ve landed on the meat(s) you plan to serve, either do a deep dive in your cookbook collection or start scouring the internet for something new to try – it has become the modern answer to recipe swaps of old. And speaking of recipe swaps, if you attend a backyard barbecue at a friend’s home and really like the main dish they’re serving, ask for the recipe. For one, they will likely be flattered, and for another, you’ll have a new recipe to add to your repertoire. Just don’t take offense if they decline your request… it may be a secret family recipe.
From tried-and-true picnic fare like burgers and hot dogs to more off-the-wall items that really showcase your talents, it often comes down to seasonings and marinades to garner those “oohs” and “ahhs” from your guests (see our Winner Winner Chicken Dinner Marinade recipe below). BEST ADVICE: Prep as much as you can ahead of your event so you’ll have more time to spend with your guests.
WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER MARINADE
Ingredients:
Olive Oil, ½ cup
Red Wine Vinegar, ¼ cup
Soy Sauce, 2 tablespoons
Lemon Juice, 1 tablespoon
Worcestershire Sauce, 1 tablespoon
Dijon Mustard, 1 teaspoon
Minced Garlic, 3 cloves
Italian Seasoning, 1 tablespoon
Salt and Pepper to taste
Directions:
Whisk all ingredients together in a bowl. Add the chicken breasts to a gallon-sized plastic bag, pour the marinade over them, seal the bag, and shake to coat. Refrigerate for at least one hour. For a more intense flavor, marinate overnight.
Planning Activities
While the food you prepare will undoubtedly be the star of the show, you’ll want to have plenty of activities on hand to entertain your guests while you focus on achieving the ideal amount of char and reaching that perfect internal temperature. This can be a passive endeavor, like turning on a sprinkler for kiddos to run through, setting up a giant Jenga set, blowing the dust off your cornhole set, or erecting a net for pickup games of volleyball or badminton. After the meal, you might want to plan more intentional activities that aid digestion, like structured competitive games such as tug-of-war, limbo, and a water balloon toss, or a walk through the neighborhood – a real plus if you live in Traditions of Braselton.
Designing a Playlist
Nothing sets a tone quite like music. You can design your playlist to fit the theme of your event – such as country music for a western cookout, beach music for a tropical luau, or ‘80s and ‘90s music for a retro theme. If you have a wide range of ages at your gathering, you might want to provide an upbeat, mixed bag of musical memories for everyone to share, spanning from the 60s to the latest hits. You can also build the quintessential “YOU” playlist – after all, you’ll be the one doing the majority of the work, and your guests will enjoy watching you cutting a rug while you cut the veggies. You can even make music an integral part of your event by planning a Karaoke Competition after the meal.
